Vegetarian & Vegan Menu

Ethiopian cuisine is one of the great vegan cuisines of the world, and not by accident. Ethiopian Orthodox Christians observe more than 200 fasting days a year on a strict vegan diet — no meat, dairy, or eggs. As a result, the country developed a deep, sophisticated body of plant-based cooking that has nothing to do with imitation and everything to do with seasoning vegetables and legumes properly.

Every dish on this page is vegan by default unless noted. All are gluten-free when served with our default injera. Dietary information

Vegetarian Combo Platter

The most-ordered dish in the restaurant. A round of injera covered in seven to nine small mounds of different vegetable preparations, designed to be shared by two to four people. Built to give you a wide tour of the kitchen in one order.

Stews & Lentils

DishNotes
Misir WatRed lentils slow-cooked with berbere, onion, and garlic. One of the most ordered dishes in the restaurant.
Kik AlichaYellow split peas in a gentle turmeric-and-ginger sauce. Mild, comforting, the counterpoint to misir.
ShiroPowdered chickpeas (and sometimes lentils) simmered with berbere into a thick, savory porridge. A staple of fasting periods.
ButichaCold chickpea spread with lemon, garlic, and chili. Bright, lemony, surprising.

Vegetables & Greens

DishNotes
GomenCollard greens braised with garlic, ginger, and onion. Earthy and warm.
Atkilt WatMild cabbage, potato, and carrot in turmeric. A favorite with first-time diners.
FosoliaGreen beans and carrots sautéed with garlic and onion.
Tikil GomenCabbage and potato, lightly spiced and slowly braised until silky.
Dinich WatPotatoes simmered in berbere. Heavier, deeper, the spicy alternative to atkilt.

Salads & Fresh Plates

DishNotes
Timatim SalataDiced tomato, onion, jalapeño, lemon. The Ethiopian table's bright, raw counterpoint.
AzifaGreen lentil salad with mustard, lemon, and jalapeño. Cold, sharp, addictive.

Sambosa

Crisp fried turnovers stuffed with spiced lentils. (We also offer a meat version; see the meat menu.) Served with awaze, our house chili sauce.

How to Order If It's Your First Time

Get the Vegetarian Combo. Order it for one less person than you have at the table — the portions are generous. Add a small bowl of injera on the side. If you want heat, ask for a small dish of awaze. That is the meal. You will be full, and you will have tasted most of the menu.
